Friday’s game will be important for many reasons. The Kings entertain the Trail Smoke Eaters, who will be looking to impress their new coaches and make up for a 3-2 loss 2 weekends ago. The Kings will be motivated to remain in 1st place and keep the Penticton Vees at bay. It’s also parents weekend, with many friends and family expected to be at the game. But perhaps most important of all is a game night dedicated to one of the team’s volunteers.
Rocco is the team’s mascot, and he needs our help. Rocco’s lioness is terminally ill and his pride needs some help from the community to help them out. Despite losing his job a few months back, Rocco continues to volunteer with the Kings on game nights, where he is often one of the first volunteers to arrive and one of the last to leave. In addition, he’s routinely out at events around Powell River, even in the summer representing the Kings.
On Friday, the Kings are putting on a night for Rocco. It’s a massive fundraiser designed to try and make a tough time a little bit easier. Three local businesses (Villani and Co, T&R Contracting and Warren Behan Home Selling Group) are offering up a minimum $2000 50/50 jackpot. Priority One is putting on a pre-game tail gate and Wolf Brewing is doing a ‘Red-cup Room for Rocco’, with proceeds going to Rocco’s pride. Donations will also be collected through the night with carriers from the Powell River Peak (a local newspaper) going through the stands.
If you are unable to be at the game on Friday and would still like to make a contribution, I’m opening up the Spin-a-thon PayPal account for donations. All you have to do is click the button below and donate your selected amount. Please include “Rocco” in the Special Instructions area when you’re reviewing your donation.
